Revising & Proposing Courses


New Courses, Courses with Major Revisions, and Core Courses:

Step 1:  Sponsoring faculty member prepares New Course Application.

Step 2:  Sponsoring faculty member presents the new course application and Environmental Impact statement to the appropriate curriculum coordinating committee for approval.

For new BSN/ABSN courses, also send New Course Application to the Director of UW Tacoma Nursing and Director of UW Bothell Nursing.

Contact the appropriate coordinating committee chair for time on the agenda to present the new course. Provide committee chair with New Course Application and Environmental Impact statement 1 week prior to the schedules meeting. Present and discuss New Course and Environmental Impact statement at the meeting.

Step 3:  Curriculum Committee reviews and approves the new course. The coordinating committee chair refers course materials and committee recommendation to Faculty Council and asks for course material presentation and vote at a SoN faculty meeting.

Step 4:  Faculty Council presents new course to all faculty. After vote and approval, Faculty Council staff liaison information Student and Academic Services of decision.

Step 5:  Curriculum Coordinator in Student and Academic Services reviews course documentation and signatures and sends materials to UW Curriculum Board for review and vote.

Step 6:  Curriculum Board reviews and notifies Curriculum Coordinator in Student and Academic Services. Curriculum Coordinator notifies appropriate faculty member and lists course in the time schedule for the appropriate quarter.

Existing Courses with Minor Revisions

Certain minor course revisions may be approved without the full application and review process described below.  changes of this nature are limited to:

  1. Grammatical corrections to the course title, objectives, or catalog description;
  2. Minor changes to course objectives; generally, changes that do not alter course description or other course details.

For minor changes of this nature, follow only steps 1-3 below.  However, if the curriculum coordinating committee deems an objectives change as major, the full review process must proceed.
